Education / Formation

I have doctorates in Mathematics (Germany) and Computer Science (UCSD). I am also a formed Jesuit with final vows and ordained as a priest in the Roman Catholic Church. Times of professional activity, studies, and formation interleave.

2001: Ordination to the Priesthood in the Roman Catholic Church, Hollywood, CA.

2001: Master of Divinity, Jesuit School of Theology, Berkeley, California (JSTB). I studied at JSTB from 1998-2000 and spend the first semester of 2001 at Colegio Cristo Rey, Ciudad de Mexico, DF, Mexico.

1994-1996: Studies of Philosophy and Theology in the Course of Studies for Jesuits at Saint Louis University, St. Louis, MO.

1980 Diplom-Mathematiker (Diploma in Mathematics), Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität, Münster, Germany

Teaching

Santa Clara University: I taught a wide variety of courses at the undergraduate and the graduate level. I graduated one Ph.D. student, Damian Cieslicki, and together with Joanne Holliday, two M.S. students. I developed courses in the Information Assurance program, such as "Secure programming in C and C++", "Computer Forensics" (for which I received training), "Network Security", and "Internet and E-Commerce Security".

Universidad Católica del Uruguay: As department chair, I was not directly responsible for the administration of the program of studies. This set-up is typical for Latin America, where there is a distinction between the department chair and the director of studies. I was the responsible for a reform of the program of studies, which was put in place beginning 2014. The new program of studies fulfilled the ABET requirements for undergraduate degrees, even though an ABET accreditation would not have been possible because the vast majority of courses was taught by adjunct faculty. I also reformed the beginning programming course switching to Python and introducing programming in pairs as tools to increase student accomplishment and student approbation rates. Besides, I taught a full set of courses according to the need of the program, such as Information Retrieval, System Simulation, Distributed Systems, Gaming, ... I recruited one Ph.D. student, Ignacio Corderí for UCSC and published papers with him and UCU students Silvia Grampone, Carlos Aiello, Luis Vidal, Nicolas Lopez, and Matías Rodriguez.

Universidad Centroamericana (UCA), El Salvador: In 2015, I was at the UCA in order to evaluate the possibility of a long-time appointment. Officially, I was a Profesor Invitado, since I did not have a permanent residency permit. I developed a M.S. program in strong collaboration with Santa Clara University, where Salvadoran students would spend two quarters at SCU and three at UCA. I also reformed the beginning programming class and introduced team-based learning in a new course Discrete Mathematics II.

Université Paris Dauphine: I was a frequent visitor (Professeur Invité) and during these times was involved formally (e.g. as thesis reader) and as co-author with the education of Witold Litwin's doctoral students Rim Moussa, Soror Sahri, Riad Mokadem, and Hanafi Yakouben.

SSRC UCSC: As a long time member of the Storage Systems Research Center, I was involved formally and informally with a number of Ph.D. students Qin Xin, Bo Hong, Feng Wang, Deepavali Bhagwat, Kristal Pollack, Kevin Greenan, and Avani Wildani.
